Irrigation Systems

Will having a sprinkler system really save me time?

Yes! You won’t need to worry about dragging garden hoses around your yard, won’t need to be home to water and won’t need to worry about over-watering or under-watering your yard.

Will my water bill increase with a sprinkler system?

No. Typically, automatic sprinkler systems actually save water thanks to increased efficiency and rain sensors placed in your irrigation system. You also will never need to worry about forgetting to turn off the hose!

How does the installation process work?

First, we begin by measuring your yard, then we will design your system and prepare a detailed written proposal. Once you accept our proposal and place your deposit, we will schedule the job. Your system will be installed over the course of 2-3 days, and you will receive a walk-through on-site at the conclusion to review the results.

Why are my sprinklers not watering?

The most common reason is that the rain sensor is active. Do you have a rain sensor? If so, bypass the sensor. It may need to be replaced. Next, check the programming on the controller, including watering start times and water days. Finally, check to see if the water is on? Check your shut off valve and the PVB, both of which should be open.

What is a PVB or backflow device?

A PVB is a brass device required by the state of Delaware for new irrigation systems or systems having modifications done, including work done to the mainline. A backflow device prevents irrigation water from contaminating your home’s water faucets, showers, and more. Your backflow will be installed by a licensed plumber.

What if my backflow is leaking?

First, turn off the water by closing the valve before the backflow or the main shut off. Next, call Sposato Irrigation for service.

How can I be sure I will get a quality irrigation system?

The right system for you is one that is flexible enough to meet all of your watering needs. It will distribute water properly and operate every year with minimal maintenance needed. All of the components that Sposato Irrigation utilizes are professional grade and engineered, manufactured, and tested with the end customer in mind.

What are the components of an automatic sprinkler system?

A typical system is comprised of a controller, valves, and sprinkler heads. The sprinkler system can be customized further with rain shut off devices, soil moisture sensors, and irrigation zones.

How do you install the pipe? How deep do you install the pipe?

We install pipe using either open trench or vibratory plow methods. The pipes are installed 10-12” below the surface.

What type of pipe do you use?

In most installations, we use 1” PVC class 200 pipe.

What is a master valve?

Master valves are usually only used on a municipal water source. A master valve is an electrical valve that is only open when the controller is on. Master valves are designed to eliminate big water bills on broken mainlines.

What is a zone?

A zone is a group of the same type of heads that covers a specific area.

What is drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation is tubing under a mulch layer with an internal emitter designed to drip water on landscape plants.

What is the difference between rotor and spray heads?

Rotors turn and are optimal for large areas of turf. Spray heads are best for smaller areas and landscape beds.

Will you put different types of sprinklers on the same zone?

No, as they have different gallons per minute usage.

I have a leak in a line or broken sprinkler head in a single zone. Can I still use my irrigation system?

Yes, just set the “station runtime” to zero for the affected zone. You will still be able to run the other zones.

General Questions

Is there a warranty?

Yes! Our installation warranty is 5 years as long as we maintain the system (start ups and winterizations at a minimum). And if we repair your system, we have a labor warranty that is good for one year. If a specific product has a longer warranty (for example, rain sensors, valves, etc.), that warranty would be in place.

Will the installation damage my landscaping?

We go above and beyond to minimize disruption and use specialized equipment designed to prevent damage.

I have a well. Can I still use an irrigation system?

Certainly. Sposato Irrigation specializes in low-pressure systems for well-water supplies. Thanks to today’s innovative technology, there are numerous options available.

How often should I check my irrigation system’s performance?

It is a good idea to check system performance frequently during peak watering season to ensure that everything is functioning correctly and that water is being applied to your landscaping and lawn. We offer this service during the summer months, depending on your maintenance package.

Inspections & Maintenance

What does the start up process include?

First, we will introduce water back into the mainline and laterals and check all valves mechanically and electrically to ensure proper working order. We will also inspect all heads for proper coverage and function. If your irrigation system has a rain sensor, we will check it. Next, we will program the controller for early spring and make notes of any recommendations and issues found while doing the startup. If you have opted to allow a pre-authorization amount, basic repairs such as heads and nozzle replacements will be fixed at the time of service. Any larger issues such as broken pipes, controller issues, electrical issues, or valve issues will be done at a later time, once we have your authorization to complete the work.

What is the process of an inspection? What is the process of winterization?

Sposato Irrigation offers several inspections starting with Spring Start Up Inspections and Summer Inspections. Our four programs are designed to keep your entire irrigation system functioning at peak efficiency and prevent costly repairs down the road.

For the process of winterization, first we shut off the water supply to the irrigation system and remove the pump start wire or master valve wire if the system is equipped. Next, we will drain the backflow device and clear out any water for the winter. Using compressed air, we will blow water out of all the lines and heads. Click here to learn more.

Controller Questions

My controller has a blank or unreadable display. What should I do?

First, make sure there is power at the outlet/GFI. If there is power at the outlet, then the controller might need to be replaced. A blank display will require some troubleshooting to determine the cause of the problem. Call Sposato Irrigation for service.
