Choosing the Right Sprinkler Heads for Your Landscape
If your landscape has many plants, they need varying kinds of irrigation to get enough water. A well-manicured landscape takes effort, but investing in an irrigation system takes some of the stress off your shoulders. When looking for a new sprinkler system, you must consider the types of available sprinkler heads. With the right sprinkler head, your plants will always get the perfect amount of water, and you save on water costs simultaneously. There are three main varieties of sprinkler heads, and we will look at them all to determine which is best for your landscape.
Spray Sprinkler Heads
These sprinkler heads are best for small or medium lawns. They evenly distribute water, meaning every part of your lawn gets the same amount of water. Sprinkler heads should never be farther than 15 feet apart because you will get dry spots otherwise. These types of heads work best on even, flat ground without a lot of trees to get in the way.
However, this might not be the best option for windy climates because the sprinkler’s mist-like spray is easily blown away. For this reason, you should consider the climate you live in before investing in a spray irrigation head.
Rotary Sprinkler Heads
If you have a larger yard, rotary sprinkler heads are more beneficial. The distance between every rotary head should be less than the PSI of the sprinkler heads. When using rotary sprinkler heads, the PSI will be greater than 30, so consider your PSI when determining placement. Additionally, rotary heads are good if your lawn has slopes and soil that drains slowly. Since these sprinkler heads water your lawn more slowly, the wind won’t whisk the water away before reaching your grass. Rotary heads also waste less water and reduce the amount of runoff.
Bubbler Irrigation
These irrigation systems have tremendous water output. They water your lawn incredibly quickly, so you must be careful when using a system like this because water can quickly pool in certain areas if you aren’t paying attention. However, you shouldn’t consider a bubbler irrigation system if your lawn is uneven or has slow-draining soil. It is much better for level lawns with fast-draining soil.
